Learning Opportunities You Can Do Almost Anytime

There is a wonderful resource on The City of Red Deer website designed to provide a little bit of information about some of the diverse events, days of celebration, days of remembrance, and the months and weeks of recognition that are honored by citizens in Red Deer and around the world. This resource is a work in progress that is in its first year of development and iteration.

Have a look at the Diversity and Inclusion Community Plan to increase your understanding about equity,
accessibility, the impact of diversity, and the improved community safety that comes from an inclusive
perspectives. This document represents voices and experiences from the community of Red Deer.

Commit a little bit of time (4-6 hours) to take this free Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA+) course. This course is not only about gender, it uses an intersectional approach that includes factors like age, disability, ethnicity, economic status, location and language. GBA+ is a tool that helps you develop a process for looking at situations from worldviews that are not your own. We all get caught up in our own
perceptions of experiences, but if we take the time to listen and learn about how other people experience situations we begin to develop perspective.

A Few Things to Understand Perspective

Learn more about the city you live in. These statistics are from the general federal census outcomes from the 1996 census and the 2021 census and represent the whole community:
· At least 5270 people in Red Deer Speak English and French.
· 13,790 people grew up speaking a language other than English or French.
· In 1996 4.9% of the population of Red Deer identified as racialized, in 2021 it was 18%.
· In Alberta in 2021 27% of the population identified as racialized.
· 8% of the population does not have their Canadian Citizenship.
· 14,765 people are Immigrants who arrived between 1980 and 2021.
· In 1996, 9.5% of the population of Red Deer was over 65.
· In 2021, 18.2% of the population was between 0-14 years old and 15.1% was over 65.
· By 2021, 1205 children under 5 had immigrated to Red Deer.
· In 1996, the average total household income was $53,525, in 2021 it was $103,500.
· In 2021 the average income for men was $64,900.00 and for women it was $46,080.00.
· The total household income for 58.3% of the population is under $49,999.00.
· 24,915 people over 15 received COVID emergency recovery benefits.
· 795 kids between 0-5 years old live under the low income measure after tax.
· 46,830 are employed, unemployed means you do not have a job and are looking for one it does not include those who do not have a job and are not looking for one, the unemployment rate is 12.3.
· 3,015 people lived in dwellings built before 1960.
· 10,815 people lived in dwellings built between 1961—1980.
· 21.3% of the population spent more than 30% of their income on shelter costs.
· The average house cost was $354,800.
· The average monthly shelter cost for a rented dwelling was $1,209.
· 3,385 of people lived in a household with 5 or more people.
· In 2022, ~334 people were experiencing homelessness (Point in time Homeless Count).

Understand the benefits of Newcomers to your community

In Canada as of May 2021, immigrants aged 25 to 54 represented:
· over 36% of people working in accommodation and food services
· nearly 38% of those working in the transportation and warehousing sector
· over 34% of those working in professional, scientific and technical services
· over 20% of those working in construction

Some areas where Newcomers are making a huge contribution to Canada
· More than 1 in 4 people employed in the social assistance sector were born outside of Canada, as were nearly 1 in 5 working in social advocacy, civic, social and giving-related organizations.
· Immigrants make up 24% of all people working in Canada as sports coaches
· Of those working in scientific research and development services throughout Canada, 37% are foreign-born.
· Throughout Canada, there are more than 2,000 businesses (defined as self-employed persons with paid employees) in the arts and culture sector owned by immigrants.
