006“The Scientific Basis and Application of Meditation“006

At present, the tremendous power of science is changing our way of life, but the humanities have not yet changed the essence of our lives, and the light of the humanities appears very dim. Therefore, what our country currently lacks most is an enlightenment and care for humanistic spirit.

Here, I can genuinely feel the “anxiety” in Professor Cui Donghong’s heart. Modern science has not yet made breakthrough developments in the pathogenesis of mental illness, but I believe that with the exploration and research of experts such as Cui Donghong, Jiang Chunlei, Jia Lijun, and Zhang Yanmei, and with the new concept of “integrative medicine,” as long as we combine modern science with China’s ancient wisdom and integrate Chinese traditional medicine with Western modern medicine, mutually verifying and accommodating one another, a new medical outlook will inevitably emerge. Sometimes, the way of thinking is the way forward, and the way of thinking is the direction.

Now, I am close to the age of sixty, but my energy far exceeds what it was when I was eighteen. Except for some wear on my teeth and vision not being as good as when I was eighteen, all other physical indicators surpass those of my youth. On a daily basis, I don’t feel tired, I don’t feel my body, and the quality of my writing is excellent. This is thanks to my regular meditation training.

American scientists once conducted an experiment. The report said that when a person is fatigued, their cells lack luster and elasticity, appearing like a dehydrated apple. But when a person is in a completely relaxed, deeply tranquil state, cosmic waves replenish the cells with energy, making them vibrant and full. They detected this effect. Based on my experience, meditation has this effect. When I am extremely tired and have no energy left, I meditate. In most cases, after three minutes at most, my entire body becomes full and energized. What I mean is that some tangible substance definitely enters my life.

So, when we enter into meditation, we can access our deeper consciousness, also known as the eighth consciousness (Alaya-vijnana), as mentioned by our ancestors, and repair the incomplete parts of our consciousness. In the “Xuemo Creative Writing Workshop,” through fire yoga, water yoga, meditation, and other practices, I guide participants into the deeper layers of consciousness, allowing them to use the power of the mind and consciousness for creative work. When you discover the secret of the Alaya consciousness, you can cultivate it through meditation, repair damaged genes, comprehend the boundless creativity of emptiness wisdom, and write beautiful fairy tales, creating perfect worlds. Therefore, when creative writing reaches deep into the soul, you can rewrite your life program, move toward perfection, and create any world you want.

It is evident that the healing power of the mind may be stronger than medicine. This explains why faith can cure some mental illnesses and depression. Many readers who suffer from depression, upon reading my books, enter a state of selflessness, becoming magnetized by the wisdom carried in the words. A portion of that wisdom energy enters their central channel, and their heart chakra opens, allowing them to experience emptiness. When they reach a state of harmony with the world, with others, and with nature, some mental illnesses naturally heal. Clearly, the root of mental illness is attachment. When you reach a state of no-self and let go of attachment, you enter a state of non-doing, and all mental illnesses disappear.

In the future, I believe that researchers dedicated to the field of medicine must learn a method of self-cultivation, integrating their life into the Dao, truly entering the world of the Dao, rather than merely engaging in scholarship at the level of technique. They should transcend knowledge and enter innate wisdom, returning to the source of life.

In the earliest times, the fundamental practice of Chinese medicine doctors was inner cultivation. Only after completing inner cultivation could they heal others. People like Sun Simiao and Li Shizhen were true cultivators of the Dao. After attaining a certain level of realization through genuine cultivation and experience, many things naturally became clear. The Meridian Flowchart, *Huangdi Neijing*, and other texts are manifestations of inner realization. My own works, such as *Laozi’s Inner Thoughts*, *Beyond Emptiness*, *True Heart*, and *Wisdom Heart*, are also expressions of realization.

Thus, a true master of medicine, in addition to mastering medical skills, must also be a grand connoisseur of culture. In short, they must value not only technique but also the Dao. This is why Mr. Fan Daiming has always emphasized the importance of the humanities. Regarding the construction of the humanities, I summarize it in five words: righteousness, clarity, sincerity, wisdom, and harmony. Righteousness represents right mindfulness, great righteousness; clarity means coolness, cleanliness, and detachment from desire; sincerity stands for honesty and integrity; wisdom transcends ordinary knowledge; and harmony refers to the community of shared human destiny. My detailed discussions on the humanities can be found in my book *Xuemo Wisdom Courses*, so I won’t elaborate further here.

In this post-pandemic era, we must keep up with the times, not cling to outdated ideas, but introduce the living waters of wisdom and embrace this era with greater openness. We must not hold on to what we think of as “treasures” as if they were private possessions. It’s important to recognize that true cultural treasures do not belong to any individual, nor to any specific people—they belong to all of humanity. Therefore, when we study the “small fish,” we must also see the ocean in which the fish live. We must dive deep into the ocean to bring up true treasures. For the sake of humanity’s shared destiny, let us contribute together, and jointly cherish a humanistic spirit, allowing it to become a positive force for the Chinese nation.
