Huang Hongxin, born in 1885, was a prominent figure in the Chinese community and the owner of Jianhe Company grocery store. His business prospered, and by 1930, he owned two properties worth 4,100 CAD and had shares in another. Described as a “smart businessman,” he was a major buyer of onions and a shareholder in the Golden Chicken Café. During the Great Depression, he notably raised relief funds for impoverished Chinese.
Around 1930, Bat Wong married Sue Lee Ping from Vancouver in an arranged marriage.
On December 1, 1932, Huang Hongxin was murdered while returning home from his store. The murderer, Ayumu Hamazaki, a Japanese immigrant, was destitute due to the Great Depression and targeted Huang for the large amount of cash (500 to 600 CAD) he usually carried.
Sue Lee Ping was born in Zhongshan County in 1911 and entered Canada at age 7 in 1918. A wealthy Chinese businessman, Yip Wing Sang, in Vancouver paid her head tax in exchange for her servitude for his children. Around 1930, at age 19, she was sent to Kelowna to marry Bat Wong, a Chinese businessman 24 years her senior.
After Bat Wong’s murder, Sue Lee Ping, who knew nothing of his business and couldn’t speak English, lost her assets to unscrupulous people. Jianhe Company store closed in 1934, and the property on Harvey Avenue was lost due to unpaid taxes. In 1937, she bought a property at 245 Leo Ave in Kelowna for 100 CAD.
Despite traditional Chinese customs against widow remarriage, Sue Lee Ping’s hardships led her to marry Ying Wong five years after her first husband’s death in 1937.
Their house had an extension, totaling 700 sqft, including a living room, kitchen, and a single bedroom where the 13 family members slept together. They later added more space for tofu production.
Ying Wong passed away in 1960. Sue Lee Ping continued to support the family by making and selling tofu to the Chinese and Japanese communities. This labor-intensive task sometimes required her to grind soybeans at 4 AM. The grindstone she used is now housed in the Kelowna Museum. She ensured all her children completed their education.
Sue Lee Ping lived in the house until 1970, then moved closer to her son. The building was sold a year later and demolished in 1973 for a parking lot. The Chinese store has been rebuilt in the Kelowna Museum, serving as a significant heritage resource, reminding people of the once-thriving, self-sufficient Chinese community in Kelowna. The building is valuable as a rare or unique surviving fragment of Kelowna’s former Chinatown.
Sue Lee Ping was very kind to everyone, often offering refreshments to friends, including Japanese people during World War II. She passed away on November 11, 1997.

Ying Wong arrived in Canada in 1919 and worked in a peach orchard in the Glenmore area of Kelowna. After marrying Sue Lee Ping in 1937, they had nine children over the next fourteen years, all delivered by Ying Wong himself due to their inability to afford hospital facilities. Ying Wong passed away in 1960.

Tun Wong was born and raised in Kelowna’s Chinatown in 1942 and lived there for 27 years. He had eleven siblings. During the 1930s and 1940s, they were the only complete Chinese family in Kelowna’s Chinatown, despite the city’s 15% Chinese population at the century’s start. On his first school day, Tun faced discrimination and fought two white students. He continued to face bullying throughout school but was eventually accepted due to his athletic talents, particularly in soccer.
Starting in his teens, Tun worked in orchards for nine years. At Kelowna Senior High School, his team won many awards, and he served as the school’s Athletic Association president for five years. In his final high school year, his father passed away. When he tried to register his birth certificate as an adult, he was told to change his name to an English one for simplicity. He replied, “This name was given by my parents.”
After high school, Tun pursued a Certified Public Accountant degree. In 1969, he joined Kelowna’s finance department and eventually became the Finance Manager until retirement. He still resides in the community.
In 1971, he married Kathy, and they have a son and a daughter. Tun has consistently supported nonprofit organizations, serving on boards such as the Kelowna Football Club, Minor Hockey Association, and Kelowna Triathlon. Other roles include the Okanagan Heritage Museum and Friends of Mission Creek. He was a steadfast supporter of Ben Lee, who founded the Chinese Cultural Society in 1980, and often fundraised by selling food at Folkfest events.
